The Friday Five: Healthy Finds for 2018

Hey, friends!

I took a little break from posting on here, and am so happy to be back. How was everyone’s holidays? It felt like a really long break this year. After the kids holiday break they had one day back at school before we got a snow storm with the rest of the week off. Needless to say, the kids (and myself)  had some cabin fever!

It feels great to be  back to reality and our regular schedules. I am working on some exciting goals for 2018, and had such a pleasant surprise when I was featured in Philly Mag by Be Well Philly yesterday under 20 Healthy Philly Instagram Accounts you should Follow Right Now. I made a lot of goals in the beginning of 2017 when I decided to get back into the influencer marketing game, so it feels really freaking amazing to start to see some recognition by a website I love and admire!

With that said, here are some healthy living things for you to checkout this week!

  1. Maju’s Mental  Mushroom Powder

If you haven’t heard yet, adaptogens are all the rage right now.

What are adaptogens you ask? Adaptogens are natural substances that work with a person’s body and help them adapt; most notably, to stress. Adaptogens are a natural ally in dealing with persistent stress and fatigue because they work with regulating important hormones. They are also a great immune system booster.

This Maju powder has the amazing combo of: Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Lion’s Mane Blend mushrooms to give you a cognitive, physical, and immune system boost. They are all concentrated into a powder to enhance the beneficial effects.

I add this to me tea. In the beginning, I thought I liked it better in coffee but it actually blends better with my yogi or traditional medicinal teas. I even find myself enjoying it (and don’t worry, it doesn’t make your drink taste like mushrooms!)

Reishi Benefits:

  1. It is a great antioxidant,
  2. Reduces inflammation,
  3. Improves anxiety and depression,
  4. Enhances brain function by enhancing energy supply to the brain,
  5. Supports gut health

Cordyceps Benefits:

  1. Cordyceps improves your stamina, allowing you to focus and keep pushing forward for longer.
  2. Cordyceps manages blood sugar levels
  3. Cordyceps enhances the immune system

All of these factors will help you keep your mind at its peak.

Chaga Benefits:

Chaga is a well rounded mushroom that has additional nootropic benefits, as well as endurance enhancing properties. Chaga is in our Mental Mushroom blend because it:

  1. Enhances endurance,
  2. Reduces inflammation,
  3. Relieves pain,
  4. Lowers brain oxidative stress and restores levels of acetycholine during oxidative stress–acetycholine promotes learning and memory, which increases the nootropic effects of the mushroom

Lion’s Mane Benefits:

Lion’s mane, also known as hericium erinaceus is the perfect fourth mushroom for the blend because it boost energy and mental performance. Lion’s mane is primarily touted for the following reasons:

  1. It combats depression and anxiety naturally
  2. It boosts the energy in your body and reduces fatigue
  3. It has been shown in animal models to enhance nerve regeneration!
  4. It is known to enhance brain function

Their mushrooms are 100% grown in the USA and are USDA Organic. You won’t find that anywhere else as other blends source from China.

2.  Tiger’s Eye Mala Bracelet

I talked about how much I love Victoria Emerson’s mala bracelets and necklaces on my blog in the past. They are affordable, good quality, and they always have great coupon codes.

Tiger’s Eye is a very protective stone. It has a powerful, dynamic energy with a watchful quality to it.  I was very drawn to this bracelet and when I found out the healing properties it made complete sense to me as to why.

Tiger’s eye is supposed to decrease anxiety, increase happiness, help you become more organized (NEEDED), find courage (also needed!), and increase focus (hello, ADD).

Many mala bracelets and necklaces are over $100, and these are under $30.

3. Fit In 10 by Jenna Bergen Southerland

Fit in 10, Slim & Strong for Life and I was so excited to dig into it.

This book is packed with exercises for every body part, transformational stories of real women, practical tips for a healthy lifestyle, and pages of delicious recipes! I love the sweet potato nachos and mason jar Mediterranean salad so far (and am looking forward to trying so many others!)

This book offers busy women and men a simple plan that will help them to achieve a healthy body by making strength training and nourishing meals so easy and doable that it is almost impossible to get discouraged and give up! The secret is the Fit in 10 Success Formula: 10 minutes of targeted toning exercise a day + 10-Minute healthy meals.

My favorite part about the meals is that is provides a ton of variety, and there is no skimping on the fat (which is what will satiate us and provides so much nourishment).

I’ll be featuring some of the recipes on my Instagram soon, so stay tuned!

4. Insight Timer Meditation App

Meditation is really the key to my calm.

I can practice yoga several times per week, but if I am not meditating and finding that stillness regularly, I am a complete mess.

Guided meditation makes it easy, and free apps make it even easier. I previously used head space, which gives you 10 free (then you pay yearly), and recently I found a new app called Insight Timer which I am loving.  Yesterday I got my car serviced, and while i waited I put in my headphones, closed my eyes, and did a 4 minute meditation in the waiting room. Afterwards, I immediately felt more calm (like I always do after I meditate).

The problem most people have with this is consistency. Even if it is a few minutes we don’t want to sit still. I am here to tell you that it is just so important. The more mindful we are, the healthier our minds and bodies will be. From overall self-care, to how you eat, to what you eat, to how patient we are with our partners and kids. I know I can speak to the fact that I am a much more patient and calm  person when I am doing this regularly.

Try it and let me know … we can keep each other accountable!

5. The Five Minute Journal

One of my goals this year is to journal every morning and night. The Five Minute Journal makes it easy. Each day it asks in the morning for three things you are grateful for, three things that would make the day great, and a daily affirmation. At night, it asked three great things that happened that day, and for one thing that could have made the day better. I find myself feeling more positive and grounded overall when I begin and end my day writing in this. Besides, it is super cute and photogenic, don’t you think?

BONUS: If you haven’t checked out Care/Of Vitamins yet they are still offering up 50% off with the code LAURY when you checkout. See my review of them here, and just for giggles, take the questionnaire because it is really neat to see the mix of supplements they recommend. They also have my on an adaptogen (Ashwanga) which may be easier for some to take over the Maju powder!

Have a WONDERFUL weekend, everyone! Talk soon!
