The Second Trimester: Weeks 13-27

My Honeymoon Trimester….

A whole lot of changes happened in those 3 1/2 months.

Once 13 or 14 weeks hit I finally started feeling myself again, but better. I never felt more beautiful, amazing, healthy in my life! I feel blessed that this happened. The days of napping for 7 hours and sleeping through the night for 8 more were over. I felt amazing! I felt good about my body, unlike in the first trimester. The “glow” showed up and so did a tiny pooch that started to pop as the weeks went on.

My appetite came back and food no longer disgusted me. I did get in enough calories during my first trimester, despite feeling nauseous (sneaking them in with high calorie smoothies). My boobs stopped hurting, Michael was able to hug me again. Finally, I no longer would fall asleep the minute I laid down to  catch up on the DVR.

When I entered the second trimester I was even more conscious about my nutrition. Beet juice became a love of mine. Was it the fact that I knew how many pregnancy-friendly vitamins were in it? Was I craving it because I knew that, or because my body knew it? Either way I couldn’t get enough of it.  Don’t get my wrong, I had some not-so healthy cravings too. Just not very often (until the brief cookie craze I will tell  you about soon).

My new-found energy had me back in the gym regularly. During the first trimester I was still in there 3 days a week or so, however I was just dragging 2 out of the 3 or 4 times I went. In the beginning weeks I was able to still do a lot. However, as the weeks went on it was so strange to literally see my leg muscles fatigue SO much after 1 set of lunges and 1 set of squats. I really started to notice that my body physically couldn’t do what it did before. This was really strange for me. There were a few episodes at the gym where I went in feeling very strong, did my cardio, and started my weights and got dizzy or really hot. I had to go sit down, drink a lot of water and leave early This made me re-assess my workouts and really tone them down. This has perhaps contributed to not being able to maintain a lot of my muscle? But I listened to my body and did what felt best.

The MOST anticipating and exciting part was getting to that 20 week ultrasound where we found out the sex of the baby! Then waiting until Christmas to surprise our family! Before that time was going SO slow. I could not WAIT. Then after that, the rest of my pregnancy has flown. I imagine that the last few weeks will be as slow as those few weeks in the beginning.

I felt my belly really started to pop around the time of my cousins wedding:

Although, I found out later that no one even really knew I was pregnant. My friends boyfriend that I just met at the wedding saw me like 3 weeks later and was like “wait, you didn’t have that at the wedding?” The groomsmen I walked with down this huge staircase had no idea until someone told him “you better be careful walking her down the steps she’s pregnant.” I was highly disappointed because I became SO proud of my bump. I call this time period the  hyper-extending my back period.  As a trainer, I would cringe seeing a person do this all the time. I just couldn’t help it though….I wanted the world to know! Case and point in the picture above 😉

*Mama Pea’s AMAZING* Vegan Peanut Butter Cookies I made (amongst a thousand other types) for X-mas and enjoyed for days and days with my beet juice 😉

After my cousins wedding, as the holidays approached, my appetite increased A LOT! Not sure if it was a sugar cycle when I started baking for the holidays, or what, but man I could EAT! Still having a lot of healthy home made juice, and eating healthy foods….but the cookie eating began. And it didn’t stop until after New Years. I was always SO hungry. Weird how that went away a little over time. Either that or I got used to it. I think overall I wasn’t really overeating too much, still working out, just hungry. There were times I could not WAIT to finish my workout because I was so ravenous. This has definitely calmed down since, even in my third trimester, surprisingly.

All in all, I can’t complain about my second trimester. I feel so lucky that I had this experience. My mom was sick with me all 9 months. My sister in law told me that the extreme fatigue she got in the beginning never went away. I also know people who were put on bed rest at 14 weeks. In my personal experience, I was blessed that I was able to workout as much as I did. I ate well and felt good. My mood was actually BETTER during pregnancy than it was before! My husband wants me pregnant all the time, haha. He tells me I have never been nicer to him in my life (I think he exaggerates. I was prob nicest when we were just starting to date lol). Honestly though, I haven’t been moody, emotional, crazy ( much). I seriously worry that the second this baby comes out I am going to just be a seaof emotions. A total hormonal mess. I would actually put money on it. Watch. Because during this pregnancy I’ve had maybe a couple bouts of emotions, but nothing extreme. I think there were months where my period made me crazier than I have been during pregnancy. I’m a freak, I know. It’s not rare though. I’ve heard other women say the same thing. Then there are others who are completely emotional all the time. That will be me this May, I will cry when my smoothie doesn’t look green enough. Stay tuned for that 😉

Highlights of the 2nd Trimester:

Getting back my energy

Began Prenatal Yoga but barely looked pregnant. I had bump envy in the beginning 😉

Finally feeling better about myself when I thought I started to show, as opposed to just looking like I packed on a few (I know you other moms can relate to that)

Started feeling “fluttering” (movement) around 16 weeks

Started feeling ‘popcorn popping” (aka baby kicks) about 19 weeks!

Finding out the sex at 21 weeks

Surprising our family with the gender cake at Christmas

Lowlights:

My skin thought I was 16 again. The breakouts and oily skin began. Oat masks were used often.

There was still a lot of time to go. But I was enjoying the pregnancy so it was OK.

No sympathy because I felt so good and still looked fit. Again, would rather feel good than get sympathy…just wish I could have both :/

    Awww you and that baby bump are too cute! im praying that when im prego ill be able to workout right until the end! It definitely made me laugh that you are supposedly nicer now then before but ive heard other moms to be say how serene they felt while they were pregnant.

    Please please please make a video if you freak out about your not-green-enough smoothie:) Im sure it would be extremely hilarious;)

    I babysat for a woman who was on bed rest for a large portion of her pregnancy and still had two other young children running around. I don’t know how anyone can do that – not that they really have a choice, but I would just go absolutely nuts not being able to be active. I’m so glad your pregnancy has been healthy and that you’ve been able to stay active and workout. I know for all of us fit freaks we just don’t feel good if we can’t workout ;). You look gorgous, I’m so glad that I’ve gotten to follow along with you on this amazing journey. Thanks for sharing all the details with us! 🙂

      That is so rough. I can’t even imagine, that poor woman!!! I would go absolutely INSANE. I go nuts if I miss 2 days at the gym in a row, even if it’s for a quick workout. I have such sympathy and compassion for women with other kids having a tough pregnancy. They need to get WAY more credit than they do!

    I’m so glad that you seem to be having a pretty good pregnancy. It’s always been my fear that I will be extreamly fatigued or on bedrest when I’m pregnant. I think I might try that Oatmeal mask tonight 🙂

      I need to figure out where I got that cookie recipe from. I can’t find where I linked it on my blog. I made SO many at Christmas, but this one was def not my recipe. Delish though!     Oh my…l am busting up at the hyperextended back thing! I so know what you are saying. Thats because Im a victim of doing this myself! haha. Seriously, you are such a gorgeous prego (and not prego) girl! I have loved and had total excitement for you this entire time and I am extra cool Auntie Mo because I have watched you grow from the very start! 🙂 🙂 I am going to get all emotional for you when shes born. Its such a special time and it will completely change your world forever. And I know how much your love for Michael will grow when you hold her and think how beautiful she is and know that HE gave you this precious baby. I always tell my hubby “thanks for giving me three of the most precious and adorable babies” because I see so much of him in them. It will just make ALL of the love for sweet little shy Michael bigger. I CANT WAIT FOR THE BOTH OF YOU. It is a moment you will NOT forget, when she is born!
    Second Tri is definitely the honeymoon phase of pregnancy. For sure! I went ot Italy with preg #3 at about 7 months! And honestly I felt great and had ridiculous energy. And tell your hubby I ate tons of pasta. Dont want him to get jealous but just sayin’ haha. But I felt so good and it was the best! then, about 3 weeks later, boom…it hit me and I was tired, uncomfortable, and back aching. lol
    Are you asking if we want a cookie recipe? Really????? Ummmm, I am giving you a definite didnt even have to think about it YES. I am the cookie monster, I think. haha Me LIKE COOOOOOOKIES!!!!!!

      I can only see Michael and I both being such a mess after she is born, we’re both going to lose it. I can’t wait though! So sweet what you say about your hubby.

      Michael would be jealous of all the pasta in Italy! Heck, I am jealous! Oh, an dyea…the honeymoon is DEF over for me. It’s kind of a struggle.

      Lol, just was asking if you wanted a cookie. Being silly 😉 My preggo brain can not remember where I got that recipe from, haha. I know it was on the internet so I def can’t post it on my blog. I have it on a recipe card, but silly me forgot to say where it was from! As soon as I remember I will link it out because they were AMAZING! I made 2 batches of them along with like 200 other cookie recipes I have for all the holiday gatherings 🙂

I am going to a shower this wknd for my best friend and all she keeps saying is how she can’t wait to give birth, she is feeling miserable. Plus she is in the Army so they’re really not too lenient with her :/

    2nd trimester was always my favorite too!!! Still never felt GREAT with either pregnancy just because of how much stretching I always did. And I probably didn’t get ALL the nutrients I should have…I totally should have blogged back then!

    My poor cousin is on bedrest and has been from the start. Her doctor said it was based on her wacky hormones. She has to go into the hospital and get put on an IV as she can’t keep enough in her:(

    I think it’s so funny how everyone says the second trimester is their best time. I’m 38 weeks pregnant and even though I’m having some serious back pain and leg cramps from the baby lying on my sciatic nerve, this has definitely been my best trimester. The first I was severely sick and slept all the time (and lost weight instead of gaining). My second I was very uncomfortable all the time and had a lot of problems with nausea and dizziness all wrapped up with extremely low blood pressure.I guess it may be because I am incredibly lucky and haven’t really gained weight (I’m ashamed to tell people the truth because I think they judge!) and I just look like I’m hiding a bowling ball under my shirt so I don’t have a lot f the complaints other preggo ladies do =]

      That;s so interesting! Goes to show we all have different experiences! Glad your last trimester is going well…you are ready to go, huh?I DEFINITELY gained weight. You are lucky you haven’t gained anywhere but your belly. My biggest complain at 34 weeks is filling out everywhere else all of a sudden.

    Since I’m almost to the 3rd trimester, I decided to read back through your 2nd trimester thoughts. I would have to agree with you whole-heartedly about losing breath so quickly. My workouts consist of about 30-45 minutes of cardio/strength/stretch about 4-5 times a week. I think that’s still great but the intensity has gone WAY down. I get over heated VERY quickly and the muscle tone is hiding somewhere in there. As for eating, since my mom’s passing, we’ve been SO busy. TOO busy even for the grocery store. I know I ate more unhealthy the past month than I have in the past year but I have a plan to get back on track in the following weeks! Should be easy now that the weather is so gorgeous! I’ve gained ~20 lbs so far, gaining ~4-5 lbs a month. If I keep that up I should be at a healthy gain of 35 lbs by the end (but who really knows). I look to you for motivation and inspiration through the ups and downs (lots of downs lately being sad about my mom). It’s been a struggle but I am keeping my eye on the prize for July!
