Funkytown

I am feeling uninspired today.

There are plenty of topics I would like to discuss that have been making my scratch me head lately, here they are at random….

Like, why do people salt their food BEFORE they even taste it. It’s like an automatic reflex to dump loads of salt on their plate upon the waiter giving it to them. I never add salt to my food, so I don’t get it?

Why do people here in 2010 start smoking? Or why don’t people make more of an effort to quit? You practically can’t smoke anywhere anymore…and the harmful effects that cigarette smoke causes to not only YOU but those AROUND YOU in the form on second hand smoke, and even third hand smoke (the lingering scent on your clothing). The cancer sticks need to go, people. I get you’re addicted and it’s tough to quit. But make an effort to stop. I ESPECIALLY don’t get pregnant women that won’t quit. Are you THAT selfish? I am not trying to be harsh, but I just don’t get it?

Why do people STILL let their kids drink tons of soda. Doesn’t EVERYONE know how bad soda is for you? WHY do people still drink it? This is not meant to insult anyone, I genuinely don’t get it? I mean, I think drinking soda is pointless. It’s loaded with empty calories, causes obesity, rots your teeth, and is terrible for your overall health…even diet soda (which can be worse). There are some sodas that contain the recipe for Benzene, a harmful chemical that is known to be carcinogenic (cancer causing). Pepsi recently changed their formula, but their are still companies that haven’t like Sunkist. In my opinion, soda is pretty much poison. But that’s just me. I can understand someone that enjoys the taste of soda having an occasional glass, I guess. But I still don’t get keeping liters of it in your home and letting your children have it whenever they want. I mean, with all do respect,  raise your children however you want to–but I just don’t get it? I would MUCH rather eat a dessert, with as much sugar, and none of the preservatives or chemicals than drink a glass of soda. Again, that’s just me I guess.

Why does Munchkin ALWAYS decide to take a poop whenever I am at my computer (his litter box is in my office). He especially does it when I bring food in here to eat and write. I just don’t get it.

I don’t get how people call themselves animal activists when they walk around in fur coats and their favorite food is Veal. I mean, live your life how you want. I am all about that, and am SO not anti-meat, dairy, etc. I don’t eat it….but I believe if you consume  organic, local meats that are more humanely raised then you’re doing your part. If you want to wear fur, that’s fine, that’s your right, I just don’t like when you call yourself an “animal activist,” meaning you only care about dogs and cat (which is fine) but you are not an activist..  Not many people know about how terrible the Veal industry is,  the consumption went down about two thirds since all the reports came out about it a few years ago. Veal is an inevitable by product of the commercial dairy industry–the dairy industry keeps cows pregnant year round so WE can drink their milk. The babies are stripped away from their mothers, fed formula, and put in crates where they can not stand up so that their meat is more “tender” for the consumers. It’s a disgusting practice, and many people just don’t want to know. The fur industry is probably the most disgusting, inhumane I  have ever seen in my life. You can see for yourself here. I am not trying to get all PETA on you, but I  think people need to be aware. If you are wearing fur, it’s most likely coming from China…where they skin dogs and cats for their fur (which is what most people over here are more compassionate towards).  I am happy to see so many celebs getting naked for the cause, and I understand that I may still own some leather items so I am not perfect. I just don’t get this day in age why people STILL wear real fur? I am not trying to offend anyone, but again, I just don’t get it?

I am sure there are many people saying “how CAN’T Laury eat meat, I just don’t get it.”and I am cool with that 😉

Why IS a raven like a writing desk?

Why am I slacking on my Holiday Shopping and Card writing this year? I need to get on the ball.

Why is hot chocolate SO much better with marshmallows on top?

Why do some people post EVERY single move they make on facebook. I am talking about every fight they have with a spouse, when they go to the bathroom, when they eat, when they sleep, when they wake up, what they are wearing, every minor life event that happens on a daily basis. I have been known to update my status every now and then, but some people are just extreme? Do I REALLY need to know that you just pumped gas and had a fight with your husband over who was picking the kids up from school, really? DO I really need to know that you just fed  your dog? I mean, a lot of peoples statuses are cute, innocent, and not updated several times a day. It’s the ones that flood my news feed with irrelevant details about every move they make that I just don’t get it. I also don’t get sharing VERY intimate details of your life over facebook statuses…it can be uncomfortable at times.

Why do some people HATE vegetables? I mean, not a vegetable that they like unless it is in the form of a deep fried potato. I guess this isn’t too crazy of a question, but it is for me…because I think they are wonderful, so I just don’t get it.

Why do people constantly eat foods that upset their stomachs. There are too many people popping antacids, and not making the connection that is it NOT NORMAL to have to use those things. They completely mess up your system, and there is a connection you are probably not making. However, many do not want to change. I don’t really understand how you can walk around uncomfortable all your life, not wanting to do something to change that. There are ways to enjoy food without needing to pop a Pepcid. I just don’t get why you wouldn’t want to do that? I think a lot of it has to do with not really KNOWING that is is NOT normal, and what to do to make it stop. More on the topic of antacids and stomach problems coming soon.

Why do we (myself included) complain in the summer when it gets too hot, then complain in the winter when it gets too cold. It’s like we’re never satisfied. I guess people in California don’t have this problem. Living in the Philadelphia area, no matter the time of year, we can always complain about the weather. I don’t get it, but I do it too.

By the way….WHY is it SO cold today? The wind is killin’ me 😉

That is enough of my daily ponderings. Again, I was not aiming to insult anyone…I genuinely just don’t get it because I have a whole other way of thinking than some people. Just throwing it out there…maybe someone can enlighten me “as to why” on some of these things?

Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!

Love Yah’s!

Oh my gosh, I agree with ALL of what you said! 🙂

I do eat meat, but don’t really crave it often. We grew up rarely eating it, but every now and then I love it. I have switched to farm raised meats and eggs as I find they taste WAYYY better than the steriod injected kind. And I figure, the one time a month I eat beef, it better taste damn good!

I also get annoyed with the constant updates on Facebook. I ended up deleting my account because it was getting out of control.

And I also get super annoyed when people talk about their acid reflux or IBS when all they are eating is fast food, fried stuff, and drink tons of beer. Umm hello??

    🙂

Like I said, so not “anti” meat and dairy, I just think people need to be aware of the factory raised meats, and how important it is to go organic! Not THAT long ago, before I gave up meat again, I was only eating organic, and BOY–WHAT a difference! I had your philosophy, the once a month I ate it, it had better taste good….so we always bought the local grass-fed from Whole Foods, and yup, didn’t even compare!

I AM anti-Veal, though, and anti-fur. They both make me sad, and people that call themselves “activists” for animals that still wear fur should be more educated on where it came from, that’s all 🙁

    1. smoking: pregnant women who smoke, that I counsel, get an earful. It saddens me that their priorities are more to feed their addiction than the health of their own baby!! HOW COULD THEY!?? If they’re that selfish, i’m sorry but they shouldn’t be pregnant.
    2. Pop: I don’t get it either. Granted, I used to LOVE diet soda, I’ve nixed it for about a good year now (although I will mix it in a mix drink on the occassion that I drink) and it’s not even something that crosses my mind anymore. My husband used to drink it everyday and again, about 2 years ago now, he completely nixed it (although he will drink it if we’re at a party or something). Our kids won’t know what it is.
    3. Our cat Boo does the same thing! He will take a crap as soon as we sit down at the computer (which is in the room with his litter). Who knows!
    4. Facebook. I swear my sister in law posts everything she’s feeling. It’s a little strange. Another thing I don’t get? Some of the pics people post. Do you REALLY want people to see you THAT wasted out at the bars? really? grow up.

You were more inspired than me this morning…still feelingin a funk but hopefully it’ll pass soon!! 🙁

The pics on facebook are out of control too! I totally agree! I lived on diet soda in high school, and think it definitely contributed to screwing up my endocrine system. I can understand having a cocktail with soda every now and then, but I don’t understand people that buy cases of it at a time and drink it like it’s water…feeding it to their kids! Oh, and pregnant smokers…makes me LIVID!

I’m very anti-smoking! I hate getting behind another car in the morning and they’re smoking, my stomach can’t handle that smell that early.

I’m a meat eater, but Veal is something I’ve never been able to eat. I don’t like the thought of it. I can’t do game meats either.

Guilty of Coke Zero though, it’s my goal to eliminate them, I have managed to cut back on them a lot. When I have kids, I don’t want to keep it in the house.

I agree with a lot of these, some of them more strongly than others. Facebook drives me CRAZY, and I don’t get smoking at all! I kind of understand the pop thing, but I really want to not let my kids have it. I have a history of loving pop, though, so I get why it is a hard habit to let kick when it’s so prevalent in society.

I, for one, found this totally humorous and non-offensive. I especially agree with you on the salt. I have a friend who does that and it drives me mad, especially when she hasn’t even tasted it. She thinks that because the doctor tells her not to worry about her salt intake, ( because of normal low blood pressure) it’s even more of a reason to use a lot of salt. It’s still not good for you!

I hear you Laury — smoking?!?! I don’t get it, but I kind of do, since I started smoking when I turned 18. But I haven’t have a cig in over 5 years! About the pop — I know it is bad. But, I still have a diet coke on most days. I haven’t been doing well with cutting it out!

I don’t understand the salt — I find most food is TOO salty, I can’t imagine adding more!

Hi Laury! I am a long-time reader of your blog, and just want to say that I love it!
I totally agree with all the stuff that you have posted today, especially the letting your kids drink soda (except in Australia we call it soft drink!).
On the meat/dairy thing though, a friend of mine and her husband own a dairy farm in the south part of Australia, and their practices are incredibly humane. They raise any calves that are born and keep the female ones, and then keep one or two males and the rest are sold at auction. They are definitely not kept in crates or anything like that. I suppose I just wanted to show that while you’re probably right in the majority of cases, there are exceptions where providers take a lot of pride in treating their animals in the most humane way possible – it can just take some effort to find them!

Hey Liz! Thanks for being a loyal reader, that makes me smile 🙂

I am happy to hear that you have a friend that runs their business in a respectable way! I want you to know, that I am solely speaking about the commercial dairy industry, not the smaller farmers that do things the right way! Like I said, I am no “anti” dairy or anti-meat…I just want to URGE people to buy from places like your friends farm, here in the US especially, I know that the mass produced dairy and meats have very inhumane practices. When I still drank cows milk I ONLY bought from a local dairy farm that produced organic milk, I am all about supporting them! Thanks so much for your comment 🙂

The salt, I really don’t understand either. I never use table salt (I have fleur de sel and pink salt + sea salt for baking) and I definitely never add salt in restaurants (there is already enough)!

My infancy & toddlerhood teacher said once she went on a beach and saw a mother giving a nursing bottle WITH SODA in it to her child… who was less than 1 yr old!!! Horrible.

My doctor asked me if I smoked, and my response was “Do people still do that?!?!” I don’t know anyone who smokes and you can’t smoke in public places here, so I rarely see it. Except when I walk by the high school around 2 or 3 pm. Sad.

For being uninspired you sure are passionate! I love it! There is something that I just don’t get either BUT I wanted to ask you since you know more about this stuff than me! So margarine is bad for you, yah? And most vegan/veg blogs that I read use margarine and not butter. But all I’ve read about margarine is nastiness. I’m not saying butter is HEALTHY, but I do believe it is healthier than margarine. This of course does NOT take into account peoples personal beliefs of animals but anyway, any light you have to shed on this would be awesome!

I’ve been surprised by all the dirty laundry people wish to share on FB. Blows my mind!

I’ve never said this before but the hubby has a smoke when he is around certain people and it drives me INSANE!!
As for soda,I never really drank it and so I just dont understand the addiction there. A coworker has 10-12 sodas a day and gets headaches if he cuts back..very sad.
Activism is funny isn’t it? Education I think is key, like you said. I too think fur has to go. Really it is not a social statement anymore…drive a hybrid lexus and NOW you have my attention!
I’m lucky that most people on my facebook aren’t using it obsessively. I use it as a communication tool mainly to stay in the loop with my big family.
I was watching people eat at this buffet Christmas party for work…I don’t think 1/4 of the people took the beautiful salad that was there…they went for the deep fried potatoes of course. People KNOW salads are good for you but if given the choice they pass it by…I have a love affair with veggies so it’s crushing!
I live on the west coast and all we do is talk about the weather…and traffic LOL! Yet, it does rain a lot here so we do have a point sometimes:)

I agree!!! I feel a lot of people STILL would get offended if they received a virtual Xmas card, as opposed to taking the time to mailing one. I get all that info from clients…especially older ones!!! That would be so much better, and less wasteful! I get all these Xmas cards, and they are great, but just are more paper!!!
