Five Simple Ways to Detox Your Home

Happy Friday!

Wow, it has been a week since I checked in here.

I’ve been using Instagram and Insta-story as my little mini-blog lately, and am looking forward to bringing some new quality content on my home base (right here) again!

Today I have a post that hopefully helps you clean up the air in your home, if that is something you’re looking to do.

It seems like EVERYONE and their mother is using essential oils these days.

They are amazing (I am a big advocate), and as I’ve mentioned before  we have a great little group on Facebook where we share recipes and ideas for detoxing the home.

It is a group made up of people who use oils, or are interested in learning (whether they’ve gotten them through myself, a friend, or someone completely random), moms, dads, aromatherapists, friends of friends  … all are welcome!

Next week I am teaching a class at Sit Meditation Space in Lafayette Hill on detoxing the home.

SO today’s blog post was inspired by the research I was doing for class. I also wanted to send a resource to our EO group, and the students over at Sit!

When I cleaned up my home environment (like REALLY threw out all the chemical and expensive “natural” cleaners in my cabinets) here are the very first things I made!

Honestly, getting started is the hardest part. We have so many members that are afraid to make these items, but when they do they talk about how it was so much easier than they built it to be in their heads!

It doesn’t take much time at all, and it is really empowering to have this at your fingertips.

  1. Homemade Foaming Hand Soap!

This one saves SO much money! You don’t even have to use EOs on this if you were like me and bought unscented hand soaps before. Now that I use oils, I will add them (especially for added purifying support), and it has saved me about $20.00 a month since my husband is obsessive with washing his hands, and I have to wash my hands so much! We have 3 bathrooms, and have a soap in the kitchen. This Dr. Bronner’s soap lasts me like 8-9 months? Maybe more? You can get it on Amazon, but here’s a tip … it was about $6.00 cheaper at Whole Foods (believe it or not) for the same size!

Foaming Hand Soap Recipe

That’s it!

Many hand soaps at he store (including Method, which I used to use), aren’t ranked very well by the EWG. We wash our hands a lot, and my kids are using this … I want to minimize our exposure to the bad types of chemicals, and this is a great way to do so!

2. Replace Your Dryer Sheets with Wool Dryer Balls

Honestly I haven’t used a dryer sheet in years. Ask my husband, he complained a lot over the static cling lol.

However, my daughter started suffering from eczema when she was a baby … and we didn’t figure it out until that summer I started cleaning up my home and using EOs.

I mean, I thought I was doing my duty by using free and clear laundry soap, nixing the dryer sheets, watching her diet, etc … apparently it wasn’t enough. Not until I starting making a lot of these other changes (including making this body butter and bathing method), and diffusing oils daily did I see a real difference.

Anyway, wool dryer balls are AMAZING. I am lazy half of the time and don’t add any EOs to them, but when I do I prefer lemongrass, lemon, or Young Living’s blend called Purification.

These are the wool dryer balls I use!

3. Shine Up Your Appliances without Harsh Chemical Smells!

Do you have stainless steel appliances?

Here is the EASIEST hack for making them shine like CRAZY!

Take a dish towel, add some olive oil and a few drops of lemon essential oil (lemon juice might work fine too), and rub it in a circular motion all over the fridge. Turn the towel around and keep polishing until it is shiny and smudge-free! I do this for my fridge, dishwasher, oven and microwave!

I learned this trick from my friends Eileen & Megan in our EO group! It is THE BEST!

Prior to this I used Method’s stainless steel appliance cleaner thinking I was being clean and non-toxic.

It ALWAYS gave me a headache though.

Guess what? Turns out it got an F rating on the EWG website (it has since been discontinued, but still).

4. Simple DIY Carpet Refresher

We have all hardwood floors, with a few area rugs and this makes me entire house smell so good!

It is the easiest thing ever.

Take an old canister with a plastic or aluminum lid that you can poke holes in.

Fill it with baking soda 3/4 of the way. Add your favorite essential oil (anything citrus is GREAT). The amount depends on how big the can is. Usually I add like 10 drops, shake a little, sprinkle, and refresh it with oils every time I clean. There is no right or wrong, you can test to your liking to see what works!

After you add the oils, shake it up (covered if it has holes), then sprinkle it all over the carpet. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes, and then vacuum.

I usually do this first, then clean all my surfaces, dishes, bathroom, etc, then come back and vacuum last.

5.  All Purpose Cleaner

Okay I wil be honest here.

In the beginning of my tossing out all of my “natural” cleaners, I started using vinegar and water.

Mike HATED it.

Then I started making all these different recipes using oils and castile soap, which were great, but they used a lot of my oils (I will drop a few of the recipes in a sec!)

Now, all I use is the Thieves Household Cleaner. Totally not even being sales-y here … I won’t even link it. However … if you know a YL rep, grab some! If you use YL and don’t have this yet .. GET IT.

It is literally the only thing I need to use for glass, wood, granite, etc. Thieves cleaner is $22 wholesale and it lasts like 6-8 months. You use 1 capful in a 16-Ounce spray bottle filled with water.

Another money saver, that will help you breathe easy!

I’m excited about the stainless steel cleaner! I use straight vinegar on everything and just try not to look at my spotty dishwasher fridge and oven (we don’t own a microwave). Totally going to do this!!
