DIY Homemade Night Serum

I made this night serum for my face so long ago, then forgot what I did (because I didn’t write it down, whoops!). There’s been many of my essential oil friends  who’ve asked me for the recipe I use, so I finally sat down and made more. I’ve been lazy this past month and was just adding a drop of Patchouli or Elemi to jojoba at night, but I have noticed my skin hasn’t looked as good as it did when I had my serum.

Luckily, this batch is even better than the last!

If you used my gelatin mask, or my charcoal mask (DO IT if you haven’t!), then you should have the ingredients leftover to make this! I am going to try and recycle a bunch of those ingredients so you guys have more projects to do with your supplies!

As you may know I am SUPER PICKY about the essential oils I use and am a huge advocate for Young Living essential oils. I took a good two years to research EOs in general, and looked into all of my buying options (because honestly I was skeptical that they even worked, and that I needed to buy the more “expensive” ones over the stuff they sell on Amazon or at Whole Foods, but even before using YL I didn’t trust the grocery or online brands so I held off).

One of the biggest convincing factor was when I learned about their farming and sustainability as well as their commitment to the planet. Things go out of stock when the crops are not available anymore. They won’t outsource anything! One popular blend (valor) has been out of stock for a year because rosewood is now an endangered species and it is important to Gary Young to not strip the planet of this important resource. I mean, this just gives me all the feels knowing I am supporting a company with these standards. You all know how I feel about The Family Cow, because sustainable farming is important to me.

They are the only essential oils company I know of that owns their own farms, and has a hand in every step of the distillation process (it is a step above organic)! Not only can I get behind the company, I believe it is important to get a proper education when using EOs, and the group I am part of is committed to that. They changed my family’s health, and if interested you can read more about that here.

(You cannot get real Young Living oils on Amazon, it is against their policy to sell on there (unless someone is being shady). Usually they have been diluted and tampered with (it is super easy to not break the seal cap, I have done it before!) so be careful and buy directly from the source.

Anyway, now that you have heard my passionate “please buy the good stuff” spiel (I could go on and on about why it is SO important to be mindful where you buy), I will give you my recipe!

Disclaimer: I am not an esthetician or skin care specialist. I did my own independent research on skin oils and ingredients to come up with something that worked for me!

Okay … so after I cleanse my skin at night (post coming on that soon!), I apply witch hazel with a cotton ball as an astringent, then massage this serum on my face in a circular motion. I always feel like my skin is glowing in the morning, and it smells so good from the added aromatherapy benefit!

This makes a big batch, so you can definitely cut it in half if you want to try it for a week or so (to make sure it works for you without wasting any EOs). Also, you can totally just not add EOs. There are still benefits to each ingredient for the skin!

DIY Homemade Night Face Serum

makes: one 4-Ounce glass container with pump

  • 3 Tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 1 Tablespoon argan oil
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable glycerine
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 1 teaspoon aloe gel
  • fill the rest with avocado oil (or another light oil like sweet almond oil or apricot kernel oil)
  • 24 drops of essential oils for skin, see below for what I use (dilution is about 6 drops EO per Tablespoon of carrier oil, I add in a few extra drops, start low and you can always add to it. More is not more when using EOs! See this dilution chart)

Use a funnel and add the jojoba, argan oil. Then add your essential oils. Add the rest of the ingredients (Vitamin E and aloe are thick so the funnel may not work, carefully pour it in the opening.) Fill the rest of the bottle with avocado oil. Shake before each use!

I switch up some of the oils I use, but here is what I added in my last batch from most to least. I have normal/combination skin and am 35 😉 so I based the oils I use on that!

  • Patchouli (7)
  • Elemi (7)
  • Sacred Frankincense (5)
  • Gentle Baby (4)
  • Clary Sage (3)
  • Lavender (3)
  • Cedarwood (2)

***NOTE:  There are photosensitive essential oils that can make you extra sensitive to sunlight and  cause burning of the skin. When using these oils topically, avoidance of sunlight is recommended for up to 12 hours, depending how sensitive you are and how much of the oil you use:

  • Bergamot
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Tangerine
  • Gentle Baby
  • Peace & Calming
  • Stress Away
  • White Angelica
  • Longevity

(there are more single oils and blends that an cause a photo toxic reaction, but these are the ones most-likely used in a skin serum. Do further research if needed!)

Have a wonderful day! What’s your favorite DIY beauty tip?

Please let me know if you try the serum or any of my DIY beauty recipes!
