About Laury

Hello! I am Laury.

I started a blog in 2009 called The Fitness Dish to share all of my health tips with my friends, but what it really did was give me an outlet and a space to share my life as I tried to maintain a healthy balance after struggling for more than half of my life with an eating disorder.

I started having babies, chronicled my pregnancies, and I wasn’t really feeling my blog anymore after that.

Somewhere in between there I became a yoga instructor, started a nutrition business, wrote an e-book, and got really into DIY beauty & body care, essential oils … and wine.

I went from being vegetarian and vegan on and off (for 18 years!) to finally listening to my truth as a (responsible) omnivore.

I went from being a full-time personal trainer to closing my PT/Bootcamp/Sports Training  business after 12 years.

My vision has changed a little, but my path remains the same.

My favorite thing to do is share wellness knowledge with my friends:  it’s my passion, and the road I was meant to be on. Everything I have done along the way has taught me and led me to right now.

I am obsessed with yoga. It changed my life and my perspective in so many ways, and I can’t wait to share more about how.

I’ve merged my favorite posts from The Fitness Dish, delicious healthy recipes from my nutrition program (formally called “Freevive” and now Flowtox), and my love for yoga and all things wellness, family, and life on this blog.

This is me. All of my passions poured into one place.

In October 2015 we rushed my son to the emergency room after he had a reaction to tree nuts. He was diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy and it has been scary and challenging, but we are handling it. You will find many old posts on here containing nuts, those are some of my best creations that I can no longer enjoy … but I want you to (as long as you don’t bring any of it over to my house).

I’d love to connect with other allergy moms so we can share our experiences keeping our babies safe with one another.

Basically, expect to see some of the awesome food I love to make, wellness tips, detoxing the home, YOGA love, as well as (some) fitness, and random stuff about my amazing, adorable, CRAZY kids (2 humans, 2 fur-babies).

I’m not perfect and I don’t want to be.

I enjoy chocolate, red wine in the winter, a nice Rosé or a Shock Top in the summer, I eat out sometimes, and some days my only form of exercise is wresting my toddler’s toys away from my crazy 70-pound puppy.  I enjoy health and wellness A LOT, but I also enjoy some not-so-healthy things. All we can do is try our best to make big or small changes each day that will make the world a better place … having fun and being kind along the way … while sharing our love and our truth in the process. This blog shares a mostly the healthy stuff, but just know there’s more to the story that I won’t always have time to write about!

“If you want to change the world, start with yourself.”

This is great! I am loving looking around your site. I just posted a review about Master your Metabolism on my blog about how I hated Jillian’s one size fits all approach. I hate reading fitness/nutrition articles and book that preach this philosophy – your blog is such a refreshing change! Welcome to my reader!

I have a question for you (when you have the time to answer!), are you a dietitian or you went to school for nutrition, but not a dietetics program? The reason why I ask is because I’m really into nutrition and would love to go to school for it but the RD programs don’t exist around me! Just wondering if you weren’t an RD, what kind of things can you do with a nutrition degree?

    May 10, 2011 at 9:36 pm
    • Reply laury

      Hi Amy,

I have done the same with RD programs and found they were not for me for many reasons. I do not have a nutrition degree, I am a certified nutritionist and a certified fitness nutrition specialist. Basically I can assess peoples diets and help them to make changes. I can not prescribe a diet like an RD and am not licensed to work with patients that have issues like Renal failure, Diabetes, etc. I work more like a coach for people looking to make healthy changes and can overlook their diet and help them to stay on track. I do not write diet programs basically…and am not really interested in doing so.

I’m cooking for a diabetic friend and came across your blog (amongst other blogs), but yours totally stood out. I like your overall concept and the fact that you post photos of your fam and the dishes you create, which makes for a more personable (and readable) experience…Not just words (blah) on a screen. My siblings are fitness gurus and they are constantly telling me to “eat right” (even though I just received a clean bill of health from my doc). Funny thing is I thougt I was eating ‘right’ UNTIL I landed on your blog! And boy do I have a lot to learn! 🙂 Also funny is that I’ll heed to a blog, and not my own family. Maybe I’m just a visual since they’re so auditory. Ha! Well, you have a beautiful family and I’m loving the wedding dress! Thanks so much for posting such healthy recipes and blogging with such ‘flair’. You go girl 🙂

Hi Danielle! Thank you so much for the awesome comment! I really appreciate you taking the time, it made me smile 🙂

I had to laugh when you said you will not listen to your siblings, but will listen to blogs. One of the VERY reasons I started my blog was that my family would ask for my advice, or complain about nothing changing, yet I would provide advice and it went in one ear out the other. Now my entire family are devoted, addicted even readers of my blog! I never thought I’d get them eating kale or avocado pudding but it’s happened! And as much as they don’t admit it, I hear from 3rd parties how they now “preach” (even though I hate thinking of what I do as preaching) some of the things they learn from me. Even my clients do it. There’s something about reading a blog where all of the info is laid out, where you can grasp it at your own time, and be entertained that will get your attention!

As far as not eating “right” –good for you that you got a clean bill of health! My philosophy is you need to find something that works for your body; and also educate yourself as much as possible on food, so you can make the best choices. Sometimes you won’t make “the best” choice, but that is normal and human!

There is a lot to learn and I love learning new things all of the time. It’s all about feeling my best, and when you eat the right foods for your body (and the environment) you will thrive!

      Thanks for stopping by!

        Hi Laury!

I’m back, but this time not to cook for my diabetic friend. I have thrown in the towel and decided to make a lifestyle change 🙂 With constant pestering from my family, those health and fitness gurus(!!), I realized in order to sustain my clean bill of health status, I needed to eat healthy… basically all natural.

With advice from fam, Dr. Oz, Dr. Fuhrman, your phenomenal blog, and my own research, I stopped eating all sugar, bread, dairy, eggs, meat or chicken (not even free range). I have been eating natural foods only (legumes, veggies, fruits, nuts, fish, and whole grains (quinoa, steel cut oats). I’m beginning to feel even more awesome and look even better! Your blog is a definite help and I love the recipes! Now if I could just exercise more! ha! 🙂 We’ll see…

        Best Regards,

What a treat it is to hear from you…and with such inspiring news! This comment really made my night tonight! You don’t even know! Thak you for your kind words and for checking in with me about your new healthy goals! It makes me so happy and I am here ::cheering:: and ::clapping:: for you. As far as exercise goes…all you have to do it move! Now that it’s summer, just try and walk more! Our ancestors {who ate how you now are} walked 5 miles a day, and if can just get a quarter of that and work your way up, you’re doing good! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself about’re doing fantastic with the eating! Keep up the good work, and definitely keep me posted! xx

I’ll keep you posted! By the way, I read your post today re: you re-introduced the water w/ lemon back into your day… You’re right, and not only does it aid the immune system, it also aids in digestion. But you knew that 🙂

You look great and I’m assuming your metabolism already blasts and blocks fat, but I’d like to share a juice drink/shake with you. I drink it each morning to jump kick my metabolism (since I’ve not been working out like I should). Tried and true, it works!

            1 cup ice
            4 oz. pomegranate juice
            1 cup frozen strawberries
            squeeze of lemon

Blend all in blender. Add water to desired consistency.

Take care and have a great night!

    Hi Laury!

First and foremost, kudos to you (once again!) for providing us with the most updated and THE BEST information both here and on your FB page! You are beautiful/glowing, you haven’t changed (awesome!) and your soul still shines through in your blog 🙂

Okay…not sure if you recall (fine if you don’t) but a brief recap…I received a clean bill of health and it took my family and your wonderful, informative, all-knowing blog to change the way I eat. I am still grateful that God used (my fam) and you and your site as a vessel to change my life 🙂

Sorry for the mush–ha!–but I’m wondering if you can help me since I’m having a difficult time making a decision. I need another juicer/processor. My family (degree/certified health/fitness gurus) advised me on many different juicers. One sibling tells me to purchase the Omega b/c it’s a masticating juicer, then another sibling tells me the Vitamix is the only way to go, then another tells me the Ninja is the best… BUT I watched (again) the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and I liked the Breville that he used….sooo what do YOU think?

I’m leaning toward the Omega ’cause it has the masticating thing going on and the way my sibling explained it was like gold spewing from his mouth (into my ears). Ha! 😛 I also don’t care about price; it’s my health and I am willing to pay a pretty penny.

Sooo… on that note, could you advise me on a juicer? Not that I don’t trust my fam (I do), but I think you know more and you’re the one w/ the blog 🙂 My siblings would kick my butt if they saw this. Haha! 😛

    In desperation,

    Danielle 🙂
*Thanks for any info you can provide*

Danielle, this comment made my night 🙂 I definitely remember you! So glad to hear you are doing well and have gotten a clean bill of health! That’s amazing and kudos to YOU! You did the work to get yourself healthy! I am glad to have been a small part of helping you. That’s awesome.

Hungry for Change is a great movie and I remember them being really big on juicing!

I am more of a Vitamix girl (which is a blender, not a juicer). I don’t juice as often as I used too. I like getting the whole veggie (juicing removed the fiber). With that said, I spent a little more $$ on my Vitamix and less on my juicer (I have the Jack Lalane power juicer it was $100. bucks). Definitely do not get the Ninja. My sister in law has one and says it’s not that great. You get what you pay for with that!

If you end up going with the Omega and juicing, definitely save your pulp! That’s where all of the fiber can make crackers and breads and other fun things.

If you get the Vitamix I can let you know a bunch of my favorite recipes 🙂

I am definitely not against juicing. I just think it’s a lot of work, time, and money (so much produce to make the juice, and I only do organic stuff). The clean up is not ideal either. I would do it first thing in the AM too, but with a little one now juicing then taking it apart to clean right away because a pain. I love green smoothies and will use my juicer from time to time for detoxing, since it’s easier on your digestion to juice.

Here’s a post I did on juicing vs. blending:

All in all, they are both great to have–but to get more for your $$ the Vitamix does SO much. More than just smoothies. You can make soups, healthy ice cream, avocado pudding, and so much more 🙂

Hope this helps! Best of luck and keep at it, girl!

    Hi Laury!

You need to wear an ‘S’ on your chest for ‘SuperWoman’ 🙂 You have a family, websites and whatever else you’ve got going on and I commend you for taking time out of your schedule and responding so quickly! Again, thank you 🙂

I read your ‘juicing’ post and it was very informative and exactly what I was looking for. The information made it easier for me to understand the benefits of blending vs juicing. I also see the differences between the two types of machines.

Your websites make my life a little easier because they include great up-to-date information and you don’t sugar-coat anything like other people and other sites often do. You just give us the ‘real’ and that is what we’re looking for.

I thank you for always providing great information and awesome recipes. Hey girl!

My name is Jenny and I happened to found you through the TSC Blogger Facebook Group! I took a peek at your blog and love what you stand for!

I’m curious to know if you’d be interested in a collaboration! Just to give you a quick snapshot of who I am…

I’m a fitness trainer and nutrition coach in LA and am so passionate about helping women transform their bodies and become confident in their own skin! It’s my mission to help women break FREE from the “diet mentality” and embrace, love, and accept themselves and learn to love the health/fitness lifestyle!

I am launching an online workout program called HIIT30 that’s designed to build lean muscle and blast fat in just 30 mins a day. I’m launching it in a few weeks and am looking for women who would be interested in trying out the program FREE in exchange for an awesome transformation and maybe a testimonial.

If there’s any way I can help you and your business goals, I am totally down! My goal is to simply share my program with as many babes as I can and maybe if you like it, we can perhaps chat about an ambassador program or biz collaboration!

You are more than welcome to check out more info on my site at

If this is something you’re interested in, I’d love to chat more! If not, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you and your biz goals!
