111 days til…

So yesterday my mom was picking up my brother from RIT so I had to switch my morning clients, meaning I got to try and take Ella to the gym with me. Key word here is “try.” She’s going through this separation anxiety phase right now. Poor thing. We went in, and it was funny seeing the big macho guys  fuss over her. I’m usually there just myself so none of my gym friends really got to meet her yet. We went into the play area, and she was the only kid in there today. The girl is really sweet and there are tons of toys and a big wide area for Ella to crawl around in! Way more space than we have at home. I snuck out since last time I was there she was fine until she saw me through the window. This time, I left her in the room and went into the locker room to throw my stuff down. I was dressed just had to take off my rain boots and throw on some sneakers. I walked across the gym to grab my jump rope to warm up and I heard her. There’s a glass window and she was freaking out. I know other moms let their babies cry, but I couldn’t do it. Not only for Ella but for Emily, the babysitter. It was not even 5 minutes and she was practically hyperventilating! It was so sad! I held her, rubbed her back, calmed her down and she would not let go of me. I stayed in there for a little and she seemed to warm up to Emily so once she was having fun with the toys I tried again. Well, the second she realized I was gone it was another freak out. I went back and got my $5.00 worth by just playing with her in there for 15-20 minutes. Poor baby girl. I missed one workout–not the end of the world.

I know that Michael and I are her world right now but I am sometimes worry about the fact that she’s so attached and gets that worked up when I leave the room! I mean, I love that she loves me, and I know one day she’s going to be a teenager and want me no where near me, so I am embracing it. I am so incredibly in love with her too that it just melts my heart when she nuzzles up on my shoulder. I want her to socialize though. So I am hoping when there are kids around it wont be too bad?? Moms, did how did you deal with this phase? I think it may be worse since she is not in daycare and only has her small inner circle of people she trusts.

It’s March!

I’ve always hated March.

Usually the winter is really long and cold and by mid-February I am so over it and ready for Spring. March is usually the month that’s in the way for me. Kind of like—can’t we just skip it and go straight to April?

Well, I can’t really complain this year since we had such a mild winter!

Regardless, people are still beginning to taste summer vacations, the beach, lounging at the pool, barbecue’s, and my birthday. Come on, I know you all think about Christmas in July {because of me}!

Okay…anyway..I had an idea for something we can do between now and then to keep ourselves occupied and motivated to not only look our best, but to feel our best once playtime arrives.



What’s the 100 days til’ summer challenge?

It’s workouts, recipes, motivation, breaking bad habits, tips, facts, no excuses.

It’s adding a healthy habit or removing an unhealthy habit from your life. It’s trying new things. It’s anything you want it to be! Whatever you want to take from it!

As long as I’ve been in the fitness industry, which is over 10 years, I’ve observed that the one thing that motivates people most is wanting to look better. I hate to say it but it’s true. Not all of the time, but most of the time. If I want to get a client with high blood pressure to eat less salt—scaring them with hypertension doesn’t usually work. I’m not even lying {because there’s drugs for that, duh}. Once I say something like “you will feel less bloated and look slimmer if you cut down on the sodium”—guess what? They cut it out! Sad but true.

100 days til’ “summer” would usually be associated with “bikini ready” or beach ready but I want it to be more than that! I want to be better overall. There are many things I want to improve in my life outside of fitness and nutrition and I hope to continue to work on them over the next few months.

I challenge you to incorporate healthier habits for your health and how it makes you feel first, and for how you will look on the beach this summer, well, wherever you’re really going to rank it.

What will  I be posting over those 100 days!???

I’ll come up with something.

No seriously though…this is where I’ll need your help!

I want to know…what do you think are your biggest vices? Is it knowing where to start? Staying motivated? Do you make excuses? Are you too hard on yourself? Do you put yourself down?

    As for the separation anxiety, I definitely feel your pain. It’s terrible to have to let your child cry when they just want to be with you. Adam went through a stage where he would cry when I would leave the house for any reason after school. It was pretty terrible at the time, but now I kind of miss it. 😉

    I’m so glad you posted about this because my daughter is going through the same thing right now. She won’t let me leave the room. This concerns me because I feel it is important for her to be able to play alone and I’m afraid it will only get worse. My little one goes to daycare are sees so many different girls regularly. The problem is- they can’t leave her alone (by law), so it’s been really hard to even have her let me or my husband run to the bathroom. I hope some other moms have some advice!! 🙂

      Yes, exactly! I felt like a helicopter mom or something lol. But I did read from 81/2 months til ??? they go through this clingy stage! I feel like Ella’s is at at all-time high! It’s refreshing to hear other moms going through it! I thought it was because she didn’t do daycare and is so used to her inner circle but I guess not!

    Love this idea! The thing that is going to keep me going till summer is that I will be training for my first half marathon. I’m excited to have a goal and this will really test my discipline.

    As for the separation anxiety, it’s very normal at this age. I only worked until my first was 3 and I remember many mornings dropping her off at daycare and sobbing the entire way to work because she was so upset when I left. She’s 15 now and probably cheers when I walk out the door.

      Awesome! I signed up for a 5k, my first race ever {I hate running!} and it’s fun to train and have a goal!

      Thanks for telling me your experience! That sounds so sad I think I would be an absolute blubbering mess if I had to drop her. I hear its always WAY worse on the mom! My clients are mostly in their 50’s but tell me stories of dropping their kids off at camp sobbing the whole way home when the kids were okay once the parents turned out the driveway!

    Hey! I’ve never commented before but I do read all your posts and follow you on twitter! I’m so into this 100 days until summer challenge. I’ve tried to take on challenges in the past I feel that I have the hardest time sticking to it, mostly in the eating aspect. I usually work out in the mornings before work so that’s not a problem. I will eat really heathy and clean for about 2 days and then on the third I could just eat the whole kitchen, especially the breads. I would really love it there was some way you could maybe help to encourage every day so I, and people like myself, continue to see the goal ahead instead of giving up so soon! I hate it about myself but I still haven’t figured out a way to overcome it. If you have any tips you tell clients that might help! If I can stick to some of your recipes and tips long enough to see some changes I’m sure that will make me want to stick with it but I just have to get there!! Looking forward to March 11!

    Count me in!

    Kids go thru an attachment phase. It’s not a bad thing and it’s not a forever thing. Maintain a calm affect/disposition when you re-enter the room where you find her to be upset. It will be very re-assuring for Ella. She will learn to comfort herself and she will eventually understand that you eventually return to her. She’s a smart baby and you are doing everything right with her. Love her up…my baby girl was the same way and now she’s 15 and confident and independent. I would love it if she “needed” me more, but that wouldn’t be in her best interest at this stage in the game. Enjoy your sweet baby girl!

      Thanks, Kimmie. It is refreshing to hear that! I appreciate the advice to. It makes sense. I just started putting her in the crib and not picking her up, just comforting her rubbing her head and back and it’s worked the past few nights! Fingers crossed!

    Great challenge Laury! even though I will be one of the ones getting bigger in this challenge, I DO have a couple habits that I want to break…sugar! I can’t say that I’m horrible, but I DO want to nix how much I’ve been eating it lately in the butt. This will be a great motivator for me! I can’t say I will cut sugar out completely but it’s the little noshes here and there that I hope to work on.

    I also have goals to keep my arms and legs in as best shape as I possibly can. I am struggling though! It doesn’t seem to matter what workouts I do, my arms are looking less toned (I think it has to do with my chest enlarging too). I’m trying not to let negative self-talk in but it more and more challenging the bigger my tummy grows. So that is another goal of mine…turn negatives in to positives!

      Well it’s not all about weight LOSS! It’s about being healthier in any aspect of your life!

      You’re pregnant–sugar is part of the fun 😉 But yes==will be doing a lot of body image stuff too!

      Even if your arms and legs get bigger {mine doubled as you saw in my photos!} it’s only temporary and it’s fat properly evenly distributing itself so you can nourish our baby! It’s beautiful 🙂

    SUCH a great, motivating post. First, you are a sexy mama! Second, I think that this is an awesome, healthy way to challenge eachother. Its not fixated or focused on “lose 20 by summer” LOL I think it is so much healther and happier to start ADDING the positive and good things in and slowely trying to remove and weed out the bad habits, cause, lets face it, we ALL have them. People think I am an insane health nut, which most of the time I am very whole food healthy eating, pretty boring actually type eating. BUT, Im not going to lie and say I don’t have too much sugar (the nasty kind) sometimes, or to many fries. Haha. We both know I will not be sporting a six pack at the beach this summer. but rather, a, uh, umm, er,,, dough like situation after giving birth to this little guy, but I think just being positive, including as much good goals, fresh food, fitness, mentally tells you that you are doing good for yourself which equals self love, good self esteem, and happiness. So this challenge is great! My pregnant booTAY is totally in!
    As far as the gym, work, family balance. That will never feel easy. It is just one of those things in life where you have to keep a long term goal in mind, consistency, and sometimes you just have to realize that its not going to happen that day. And you move on to the next. Consistency is key. A huge frustration for new moms is they either just feel like they can’t do things for themselves, or they listen to their kids scream so they can get it done. I am a very very very gentle mother, and I was the same as you, if my kids were screaming at the gym, I would just go in with them for a little bit and try again the next day. It can be frustrating though. With my second daughter Brooklyn, she would scream until she puked. So it was a difficult challenge. But one thing that really worked for her was to bring a little baggy of things she was familiar with , a few of her favorite toys, and a blanket of hers and then I would tell them to let her cry for 10 minutes tops and then come get me. After doing this routinely even if I didn’t get a workout in, she eventually got the hang of it that I wasn’t abandoning her and that I would be back! And she grew out of it. I never left my kids with anyone but their two grandparents. But just keep consistantly giving her a chance to try again. and give her just enough time to cry and possibly calm down, but not until she is having full blown anxiety. Having that little bit of time for YOU though is so so important, and hard to fit in, and not something I have mastered yet. :/ I will happily add and share good light fresh summer beachy ready meals through the challenge. 😀 Love ya girlie! You are such a good Mama!

      Oh me–that sounds awful about Brooklyn! You must have felt so bad! I love y our suggestions. I did bring her bag with some toys, but she is not attached to her blanky–I think next time we can try to bring that since it’s her number #2 security item {next to my boob}. She’s never been babysat by anyone besides her grandmothers and my sister so it’s the same thing!! I am lucky to get in my gym time on the tail end of my PT schedule but I am not always working and it would be nice to be able to bring her to the gym for playtime and socializing with the other kids too!!

      I am ALL for your recipes too! I will be needing them–we all will 😉 Love yah!

    oh i’m in! hey i did your last HIIT workout and i only made it through the tabata warm up and 2 rounds, just could not get out the last one it was a doozy! 12mins of HIIT is a-ok with me. hmm i need some workout motivation bc i am only doing 2-3 workouts lately. i’d like to have it be 3-4 as i feel best that way but i’ve been so crazy busy at work that i sleep like a baby and am dead tired in the morning! i’m a morning exerciser when it happens haha.

      That’s awesome coming from you! I did it today using the bosu for squats and mountain climbers and I was struggling a bit on that last round! My jump squats were SLOW on the 3rd!

      Sleep is good though! A very important part of fitness! You go hard!!!

    I need more help with healthier eating. I feel like I have good working out habbits, but I’m not seeing changes, so it must be the eating thing. I loved your post on what you eat. And I’m new to trying to make eating changes, so when I read healthy blogs and they start throwing out things like protein powders and chia seeds I get lost cause I don’t know where to start and how to incorporate these things or pick them out at the store. Or how much protein, carbs, fat, etc…and healthy fats, calorie dense, complex carbohydrates, I’m honestly not sure what it all means and how it translates into what is healthy to eat. I’m feeling overwhelmed….I think this is more than you were asking for.

    I’m in the process of majorly, if not totally, eliminating alcohol. There may be one glass of wine a couple times a year pass my lips, but overall I would love to stop drinking completely. I’m so tired of the buzzed feeling every weekend, not being in control of your body, and the way you feel the next day (and sometimes days after). And also since it’s a depressant, I’m tired of feeling depressed (!!). It’s only when I drink that I feel depressed, too! Ugh.

    But I am incorporating a second daily walk into my routine. My mom and I go for a long morning walk before work, but I’d also love to go on another one after work to unwind from the day. It’s the most fun exercise for me right now! 🙂

      Wow! Good for you! that’s quite a challenge! I barely drink–years ago, in my early 20’s–I had one too many nights where I got sick, or over did it. I got to the point where I hated how I felt, and I rarely drink anymore. I do enjoy a glass of wine or a beer every now and then but I am usually the DD on the weekends! If this is going to make you feel your best then I think it’s a great idea! Good for you!!!

      I love that you walk with your mom too! A second walk is an awesome goal. So great for digestion to walk after dinner!!!!

    Its the end of Summer here in Oz. Devastated. And the rains here already. Gum boots already on for the school drop off.

    As for babies and the gym creche. Keep at it. She’ll soon love it and be dragging you there. Be positive when you walk away. Happy and say ‘bye bye Mummy will be back really soon’ with a big smile on your face. Then when you get back dont make a big fuss of when you arrive back. She’ll get there and you’ll never look back!!

      Thank you for your advice! It’s great! I thought that bringing attention when I left would make her more upset but I will try telling her I will be back! It makes sense so she doesn’t think I just disappeared. I mean–the girl gets so upset when I vacuum she thinks the thing is going to eat me! It’s so sad but so cute her face–we need to put it on youtube! between her and my cat hating it my poor carpets are suffering!

      As for the bday cake I am still playing around with some things but I have incorporated some suggestions from the cake you posted! I made her pumpkin muffins last night–they were really good no added sugar!

    So sorry about Ella! My sister had this problem with her oldest son and it was so hard for him to leave him anywhere. He would scream and cry for so long after she left. It was just a stage so she will grow out of it!
